Iceland ‘95 (Part 4) – Around Reykjavík
Oh no, it’s the last one from ‘95 :( A couple of days were spent just strolling round Reykjavík, taking in the sights. To describe it all would take forever so these are just pics and I’m only going to say that it is a wonderful city, very clean, with lots of things to see and do, many fine restaurants and very friendly inhabitants. GO THERE!
The City
The first thing that strikes you about Reykjavík is the number of different coloured buildings. If someone told you they were going to design a street like this, you’d laugh at them, but here it works. Don’t know why, it just does.
The Statues
There are a large number of sculptures and statues scattered throughout the Reykjavík area ranging from pretty normal (see left) to a bit odd (see right).
The Churches
Churches are also common in Reykjavík and these are two of the most prominent.
Bonus Items
The palm tree here is growing at Perlan, The Pearl, which is an amazing structure set on a hill. It consists of six 4 million litre tanks, which hold the city’s hot water, topped by a glass dome. In the Pearl there is an artificial geysir fountain, a cafeteria, a bar and a revolving reataurant which serves first class cuisine. There is also a viewing platform all the way round which gives panaramic views of the whole city. We also have another sculpture discovered near the School of Navigation. I don’t know what it’s about but it’s neat so here it is.
